Immaculate Conception
The Immaculate Conception (Inmaculada Concepción) on 8 December is a Catholic solemnity about Mary’s conception free from original sin and a Spain-wide public holiday.

It honours Mary’s unique grace from the first moment of her life; it is not the conception of Jesus.

Long devotion culminated in Pius IX’s 1854 definition (Ineffabilis Deus); Spain retains the day as a national labour holiday.
