Asturias Day
Asturias Day on 8 September is the Principality’s regional holiday, tied to Our Lady of Covadonga and modern self-government.

It combines devotion to la Santina with official recognition of Asturian institutions and culture.
Origin and history
Pre-autonomous decree (1980) and Ley 5/1984 fixed 8 September as Día de Asturias after parliamentary debate.

Mass at Covadonga, medals and honours, and a rotating host municipality’s cultural programme; regional public holiday.
Interesting facts
- Same day as the feast of the Virgin of Covadonga.
- Host town is chosen each year by the regional government.
